Tesco HSC launches Retail Test Lab in Bangalore

The lab is the first of its kind in India and will test and certify all the retail software and solutions developed at Tesco HSC

BANGALORE, India; June 14th, 2007 - Tesco Hindustan Service Centre (HSC), the global services arm of Tesco, world's third largest retailer, has unveiled Tesco's first Retail Test Lab in India at their Bangalore Centre. The Retail Test Lab has been established to test and certify all the retail software and solutions that is developed at Tesco HSC for the stores in the UK and Republic of Ireland (ROI)

The lab will replicate the entire Point-Of-Sale testing infrastructure that is currently available in the UK for testing and certifying all the software that goes into an estate of 1500+ stores in the UK and ROI. Spread over 7000 sq.ft, it has 27 tills deployed along with a host of peripherals like scanners, card readers, pin-pads etc. for the 5 test stores that are currently deployed. The first phase will also have the Petrol Filling Stations (PFS).

Speaking on the occasion of the launch, Meena Ganesh, CEO, Tesco HSC said, "The Lab is a big milestone in our effort to build Tesco HSC as a centre of excellence in Retail technology and processes. The lab will provide a unique opportunity to our employees to understand and appreciate the environment that Tesco operates in.

Over a period of time, Tesco HSC will be involved in the development of retail applications for which the lab will play an important role in analyzing requirements and functional testing. The lab would also cater to the Operating Model in other countries including US stores and additional requirements for POS (Point of Sale)." she added.

Sridhar Rathnam' Head - IT Services, Tesco HSC, said, "The primary objective of this lab will be to simulate support issues and be able to completely support the retail applications from HSC. In less than a year the complete testing that currently happens out of the lab in UK will be done out of HSC, with the UK lab's scope to cover end user testing, work with vendors on piloting new hardware and other new R&D initiatives."

Currently the lab is equipped with 5 store formats that include the SuperStore, the Express and Alliance formats.
